“Painted Pictures”

by Deputy Chief Robert R. Devonshire, Jr
Strasburg Fire Company #1, Lancaster County (PA)

These painted pictures in my mind
They pay a visit from time to time.
Out of the blue and from memories
They pull me back to what I still see.

The faces live in the pain I feel
I know they’re gone but it feels so real.
I’ve tried to leave them far behind
The painted pictures in my mind.

Painted pictures in my mind
Memories from another time
I only did what was asked of me
Now the painted pictures stay with me

I know it’s all from the past
They show up and seem to last.
I wear a smile pretend I don’t feel
This invisible wound that’s pain is real.

Little things can bring them back around
Something I see, a smell or sound.
I try not to look but I always find
The painted pictures in my mind.

Painted pictures in my mind
Memories from another time
I only did what was asked of me
Now the painted pictures stay with me
